» Venterskroon, Parys, 9585

The Dome lies close to the town of Parys, about 70mins drive south of Johannesburg. The Dome itself refers to the entire impact area of a meteorite that struck the areas around 2 billion years ago and not a specific site as some may see it.

The Vredefort crater is the largest verified impact crater on Earth, more than 300 km across when it was formed. The impactor was estimated to have been some 12-20km across (almost twice the size of the one considered to have caused the dinosaur extinction) travelling at 10km/sec.
